Happy Women’s History Month (and Social Work Month)!

This month, as both a social worker and someone celebrating another year of life, I’ve been in a deeply reflective space.

And here’s the truth I keep coming back to:

I thought healing meant becoming a completely new person.
It doesn’t

The Lie: “New Year, New Me”

For a long time, I believed growth meant reinventing myself.

A total transformation.
A completely different version of me.

But life—through both gentle nudges and moments that felt like emotional whiplash—offered me a different choice:

👉 Change how I show up
or
👉 Stay the same and let my environment decide for me

And honestly?

Becoming a “brand new me” felt exhausting.

So I didn’t.

What Actually Changed Everything

Instead of overhauling my entire life, I did two simple things:

I chose one mantra.

And one behavior.

That’s it.

1. The Mantra That Rewired My Mind

Whenever my thoughts spiraled into self-doubt or discouragement, I interrupted them with one consistent message.

Over time, something shifted.

The same situations didn’t disappear—
but they stopped feeling like the end of the world.

What used to feel heavy started to feel manageable.

I could feel my emotions—without becoming them.

. The Behavior That Reconnected Me to Myself

I chose to focus on my sleep.

Not just more sleep—better sleep.

So I started small:

  • Magnesium-rich foods

  • No late-night eating

  • Boundaries with social media

And my body responded.

Then I started listening.

I stopped pushing past exhaustion.
I honored when I needed rest.

And for the first time in a long time, I felt connected to myself again.

The Part No One Talks About

As I stayed consistent with those two small changes…

I started meeting versions of myself I thought I lost.

My boldness.
My softness.
My voice.

And that’s when it hit me:

👉 We don’t lose ourselves.
We suppress parts of ourselves to survive.

Why This Matters (Especially for Women)

So many of us—especially women—learn to shape-shift.

We become:

  • who our families need

  • who our workplaces reward

  • who our communities expect

But somewhere along the way, we stop asking:

Who do I need to be for myself?

The Shift That Changes Everything

Healing isn’t about becoming someone new.

It’s about integrating all the versions of you that already exist.

The soft one.
The assertive one.
The ambitious one.
The tired one.

All of them have a place.

If You Feel Stuck, Start Here

Not with a full life overhaul.

Not with pressure.

Start small:

Pick one mantra
Pick one behavior

And commit to them.

Because real change doesn’t come from doing everything.

It comes from doing one thing consistently enough that it changes you.

Final Truth

You’re not behind.
You’re not broken.
And you don’t need to become someone else.

You need to find your truth, built on the habits and narratives we build today.
